Southern Region Charity Run to Kinsale RNLI Station 23rd Oct. 2013

We assembled at Travel Lodge Hotel Cork and made a collection for the Kinsale Lifeboat Station. RNLI is financed totally by charitable contributions. Last year it cost in excess of €17 million to run the Irish operation.

Kinsale Station was built in 2010 and cost in excess of €1million. An English Lady Miss Sally Anne Baggy donated the total cost of the station to RNLI. All the members of the RNLI are volunteers and Kinsale has 35. They are on call 365 days per year. This year they had 40 emergency callouts. The latest was in July when they saved 30 lives when a Dutch training vessel Astrid ran on to the rocks just off the coast of Kinsale. Within 1 hour all the survivors were off the Astrid and there were no fatalities. All this happened in 2 mt. waves and force 7 gale. It was a magnificent display of courage and skill by the Kinsale team .

12 cars travelled to Kinsale where we were welcomed by Station Manager John O Gorman and his fellow volunteers. We were given a full tour of the station and a demonstration of all the equipment used in a call out and the training they participate in to become a member of the team.

They also launched the Miss Sally Anne (Baggy) and did a demonstration run in the inner harbour for us and did a full recovery of the boat again and put it back in its cradle ready for a new launch.

The boat can be launched within 10 mins of recieving a emergency call.

We presented a piece of Blarney Crystal to mark our visit and an envelope with €235 to the Charity towards the running of this very valuable service.

A very big thanks to John and his fellow volunteers for a wonderful and memorable visit.

We the drove to Old Head Head of Kinsale and travelled back to Carlton Hotel Kinsale where we had a very enjoyable long lunch.

This saturday we are having our Christmas night out at Cork Greyhound Racing track where we are having a full Party with Mulled wine Reception, Dinner, Racing and Entertainment until late.

This will mark a very active and enjoyable year for the Porsche Club Ireland Southern Region.

Thanks to all the members for their fantastic support during the year and we look forward to a very successful 2014.
